Unit Information
Beds: 29
Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years in Adult ICU
First-time traveler requirement: Must have completed at least one 13-week assignment
Specialized Care and Patient Types
Neuro ICU includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injuries, seizures/status epilepticus, spinal cord injuries, EVD drains/ICP monitoring, post-op Cranís (straight from OR), IR (straight from procedure), TNK patients – 50% of administrations on unit vs. ED
Some off-service Trauma or Medical ICU patients
Staffing and Ratios
RN: 1:2; sometimes triple-dependent on downgrade orders
CNA – not consistently staffed on this unit
Required Certifications
BLS
ACLS
NIHSS
Skills and Equipment
Epic experience required
Management of external ventricular drains (EVD), intracranial pressure monitoring, Ventilator Management, vasoactive drips, tracheostomy care, central line maintenance, post-monitor TNK and IR
CRRT may be seen; traveler could take this if competent
EMR: Epic - Required
IV Pump: Alaris
Monitors: Philips
Unit equipment: Artic Sun (Targeted Temperature Management), Vigilance Monitor, CRRT, ICP Monitoring/EVD drains
Department Support
Stroke Response Nurse
Clinical Educator
Phlebotomy: Nurse Draw
RT 24/7: Yes
Intensivist 24/7: Yes; NP or PA in-house for emergencies as part of Neurocritical Care Team
Pharmacist – shared after 2300
PT/OT/ST – 7 days a week
Case Management/Social Work
Scheduling and Holidays
Weekend rotation: every other (Fri/Sat/Sun)
No on-call schedule
Holiday expectations: Travelers will work 75% of holidays
Schedule cycle: every 6 weeks
RTO: Manager approval
Orientation and Location
Orientation: facility and unit (NEO); 2 days departmental depending on skillset
Scrub Color: Navy Blue
