Overview The
Physician Program Director
(PPD) focuses on establishing formal Impella programs through sustainable relationships with account stakeholders and key opinion leaders (KOLs) in hemodynamic support.
KOL Engagement Develop and manage strategic relationships with KOLs, thought leaders, and experts to support the organization’s scientific, medical, and commercial goals. Represent all aspects of Abiomed and act as a field liaison connecting hospitals to internal resources such as medical office, research, marketing, and executive teams.
Program Resourcing Collaborate with hospitals and administrators to identify program efficiencies, implement best practices, develop protocols, and improve workflows for long‑term sustainability.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and implement a comprehensive KOL engagement strategy aligned with brand and therapeutic objectives.
Build sustainable relationships with designated accounts, health systems, and stakeholders to formalize Impella programs and optimize outcomes.
Understand hospital market dynamics, uncover gaps in operational efficiency and patient care, and deploy tools to expand patient reach.
Present complex health‑economic information to diverse audiences in an engaging, credible manner.
Advocate heart‑recovery programs to health system administration and align projects with hospital administrators.
Identify and develop emerging KOLs through customer visits, executive programs, regional education courses, and local initiatives.
Serve as a corporate liaison among KOLs, IDNs, health‑care leaders, and Abiomed executives, marketing, clinical research, and sales teams.
Communicate routinely with sales and leadership teams as outlined.
Job Qualifications
BA/BS required; MBS or MBA preferred.
4+ successful years of sales experience within Abiomed or >7 years of related industry sales with proven success.
Prior KOL management experience or existing relationships in the geographic area.
Experience partnering with C‑Suite hospital administrators.
Experience partnering with IDNs or systems of care.
Ability to travel overnight extensively (70% depending on geography).
Strong understanding of U.S. health‑care policy and payment systems.
Outstanding interpersonal and relationship‑building skills at all organizational levels.
Balance strategic thinking with tactical execution.
Responsive with a sense of urgency.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities.
Demonstrated project‑management ability and drive initiatives to completion.
Excellent written and oral communication, including strong presentation skills.
Mastery of cardiac anatomy and clinical data.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for data analysis and presentations.
Compensation & Benefits Expected base pay range: $132,000 - $211,600. Eligible for a competitive sales incentive compensation program and a company car allowance via the FLEET program.
Employees are eligible for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short‑ and long‑term disability, business accident insurance, group legal insurance, and a consolidated retirement plan (401(k)).
Time‑Off Benefits
Vacation: 120 hours per calendar year
Sick time: 40 hours (or 56 hours for Washington state)
Holiday pay: 13 days per calendar year
Work, Personal and Family Time: up to 40 hours per calendar year
Parental Leave: 480 hours within one year of birth/adoption/foster care
Condolence Leave: 30 days for immediate family, 5 days for extended family
Caregiver Leave: 10 days
Volunteer Leave: 4 days
Military Spouse Time‑Off: 80 hours
