Financial Manager – Dean’s Office (Remote)
for the Stanford School of Medicine in California. The role supports the Dean’s Office and other central units by managing end-to-end finance functions, including budgeting, forecasting, data modeling, reporting, internal controls, and labor schedules. The position works closely with senior associate deans and program directors and offers strong influence, visibility, and potential for future promotion.
Duties
Manage all financial activities for senior stakeholders in the Dean’s Office, including the Vice Dean and Senior Associate Deans.
Serve as subject‑matter expert on complex financial or technical matters.
Lead financial analyses—budgets, year‑end projections, ad‑hoc projects, and reconciliations—to inform senior leadership.
Lead the annual budget submission and year‑end budget management process, performing scenario planning as needed.
Conduct analytical reviews of financial data, draw conclusions, develop solutions, and produce monthly reporting.
Provide strategic analysis for senior leadership presentations and support high‑profile decision‑making.
Ensure funds are used appropriately, support the mission, and comply with policies and donor intent.
Identify key issues and develop solutions to resolve discrepancies in processes.
Design and implement internal controls, ensuring compliance with university policies.
Lead special projects impacting the entire School of Medicine, such as Business Expense Guidelines applicable school‑wide.
Collaborate with hospitals to create and execute complex financial agreements.
Continuously analyze existing systems and processes, recommend improvements, and lead process excellence initiatives.
Develop procedures, policies, training, and standards for financial systems and reporting tools.
Coach and train staff within the Dean’s Office on policy and system changes.
Other duties may be assigned as required.
Desired Qualifications
Strong technical finance knowledge, including GAAP and fund accounting.
Advanced analytical skills for reviewing complex financial information.
Proficiency in Google Sheets, Microsoft Office (Excel), and business financial systems such as Oracle/OBI.
Experience with a medical school’s financial operations.
Education & Experience (required) Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (required)
Expert proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
Advanced knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning and financial systems.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to prepare and present information to diverse audiences.
Advanced project management skills and the ability to lead large, multi‑functional teams.
Physical Requirements
Constantly sitting and performing desk‑based computer tasks.
Occasionally stand/walk and lift/carry objects weighing 11–20 pounds.
Rarely reach/work above shoulder height.
