Police Communication Operator
Location: Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) – Tallahassee, FL
Department: Campus Safety and Security – Police Communications Department
Overview This non‑sworn law enforcement position operates a public safety communications center, monitoring telephone and radio transmissions, dispatching emergency services, and maintaining situational awareness for police operations on campus.
Responsibilities
Operate telephone, two‑way radio, and computer systems in the public safety communications center.
Receive and evaluate emergency and non‑emergency calls, refer callers to agencies or extensions.
Transmit messages to and from the FAMU law enforcement officers regarding complaints, crimes in progress, and general communications.
Update and monitor unit status using the computer terminal, and transmit emergency service requests.
Monitor surveillance cameras and building alarms; dispatch incidents to the appropriate personnel.
Monitor the police scanner for campus and inner‑city emergencies, relay the safety conditions of officers.
Maintain written records of all transmissions, messages, and complaints per FCC and FAMU Police Department requirements.
Operate FCIC/NCIC; use the Criminal Justice Information System (CTIS) for student and employee records, housing, and auto registration.
Assist in Everbridge Notification, Federal Warning Systems, and operate the TDD machine for the hearing impaired.
Perform special details and other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent plus at least one year of related work experience.
Successful completion of State 911 Certification and NCIC/FCIC system tests within six months of hire.
Knowledge of police communications phases, computer terminal operations, enhanced 911 system, and criminal justice information system.
Conflict resolution, critical thinking, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to differentiate emergency from non‑emergency situations, perform basic computer functions independently, and function under stress.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and university policies.
Preferred Qualifications
College coursework or vocational/technical training equivalent to the required experience.
Prior experience in public safety communications or police dispatch.
Salary and Benefits
Anticipated salary range: $42,000 – $48,815.59 (USD).
Position in USPS (University Support Personnel System) pay plan.
Work schedule: 24/7/365 rotating shifts; special events as required.
Federal and state benefits per campus policy.

FCIC/NCIC certification and State of Florida 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification required.
