Job Description
This full‑time faculty position has the opportunity to teach any VCCS Psychology course at Laurel Ridge Community College, with special emphasis on foundational courses. Faculty members help to provide a positive, caring, and dynamic learning environment that inspires student success, values diversity, promotes community vitality and embraces Laurel Ridge Community College’s vision and values. This faculty member will work to support the goals of Laurel Ridge Community College and the study of psychology, while adhering to all Virginia Community College System policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
Serve on college committees (as assigned)
Evaluate and revise the curriculum
Participate in monthly college-wide and division meetings
Assist with program assessment and development
Engage in activities that demonstrate a commitment to students, community organizations, and/or the College
Collaborate with full and part‑time employees to ensure teaching uniformity and continuity of material and expectations
Other Duties
Seek out opportunities for increasing response rates on student course surveys, analyze student ratings and feedback, identify trends needing improvement, and implement an action plan to accomplish that improvement
Respond constructively to student comments and questions and require the same nature of response from students; respond promptly to student emails, phone calls, or other communications (within 2 business days)
Publish student engagement hours throughout the semester and delineate virtual versus in‑person
Be available for face‑to‑face courses several days per week based on student needs; teaching schedule may include day, evening, weekend, and on‑and‑off‑campus, distance learning, and web delivery; use best practices in face‑to‑face and online teaching
Engage in activities that keep current in pedagogy and curriculum
Potential academic advising, recruiting, tutoring as applicable
Compensation & Benefits Salary range: $54,387 to $117,180 per year (actual starting salary commensurate with education and/or experience). The position is a 9‑month faculty role and is eligible for the benefits package offered by the Commonwealth of Virginia for state agencies and the Virginia Community College System. Required Qualifications and Experience (KSA’s)
Completed Master’s Degree in Psychology or a related field, or a Master's degree with 18 graduate‑level credits in psychology. Candidates who will complete their graduate degree by the time of appointment will be considered.
Excellent written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to present on subject matter clearly and accessibly.
Preferred Teaching Experience
Teaching experience at the post‑secondary level, especially at a 2‑year institution.
Experience teaching introductory psychology and developmental psychology courses in a variety of formats (traditional in‑person, hybrid, online, Hyflex, etc.).
