Black Hills State University invites qualified, self‑motivated candidates to apply for the position of Associate Vice President for Facilities Services within the Facilities Services Department. Anticipated start date is May 2026.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversee the Facilities Services department and provide operational leadership for building maintenance, custodial services, landscaping and grounds management, project management, fleet management, public safety, risk management, and sustainability for both the Spearfish and Rapid City campuses.

Lead strategic and master planning efforts in collaboration with the Vice President for Finance & Administration.

Plan, coordinate, and implement new construction, renovation, and maintenance projects.

Oversee project budgets, schedules, and contractor performance to ensure compliance with university standards, codes, and regulations.

Develop and monitor preventive maintenance programs and operational procedures to maximize efficiency.

Collaborate with campus departments and external partners to support space planning, sustainability, and accessibility initiatives.

Supervise and mentor assigned staff, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and professional growth.

Responsible for long‑range facilities planning, including capital improvement projects and deferred maintenance strategies.

Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, building codes, and institutional policies.

Review and analyze space utilization, reporting, and assignments.

Oversee emergency planning, preparedness, and continuity operations.

Assist with annual budget development and monitor departmental budgets.

Work closely with university leaders to align facilities operations with institutional goals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Effective project management, financial analysis, and strategic planning skills.

Understanding of industry best practices to benchmark and drive performance metrics.

Track record of implementing cost‑effective facilities management, capital projects, and/or related services.

Strong financial planning related to capital projects and maintenance & repair.

Team building and leadership development with a proven ability to attract, develop, and retain a high‑performing team.

Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in facilities operations, construction management, engineering, architecture, business, or a closely related field.

At least eight years of progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance and operations, facilities management, engineering, or construction.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in a related discipline.

Experience in a facilities management leadership position in higher education or related organization.

Experience leading major strategic initiatives.

COMMENTS This position reports to the Vice President for Finance & Administration. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, with occasional irregular hours, travel, or weekend work as needed. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
