Job Description and Duties Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Landscape Maintenance Worker performs a variety of laboring tasks to maintain State highways, landscapes, and associated infrastructure. The incumbent may work alone or as part of a crew, and can be loaned to another crew as needed.
Tree trimming; felling, loading, unloading, and shoveling material.
Chemical application, roadside mowing, drainage ditch and culvert repair.
Clearing drainage inlets; picking up litter; weeding, pruning, planting, and fertilizing.
Rest area and irrigation repair, including plumbing, electrical and HVAC components.
Minute adjustments and emergency repairs to equipment; steam cleaning of equipment.
Record keeping: crew daily records, spray and accident reports, pre‑op and post‑op reports.
Operate a range of light equipment: chainsaw, weed‑eater, lawnmower, brush chipper, light construction vehicles.
Maintain and repair fixtures at rest areas (soap dispensers, basins, toilets, urinals, faucets, drains, etc.).
Assist with traffic control duties as directed by the supervisor.
Working Conditions Position located at 5065 Mtn. Lakes Blvd., Redding, Shasta County. The crew schedule is 4/10s in summer and 5/8s in winter. Workers may be required to travel out of town up to 80% of the time. Work may be performed in extreme temperatures (up to 120°F or –15°F) and adverse weather (winds, rain, sleet, snow). Overtime, nights, and weekends may be required for emergencies or special projects.
Personal Safety Requirements
Wear work boots, protective shirts or safety vest, and long pants.
Use safety gear provided by Caltrans (hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, face shield, gloves, respirator, chaps) as required.
Must travel to work sites; travel time may be up to 80% of work hours.
Minimum Requirements Eligible applicants must hold a valid California Class C driver’s license (and will be required to pass a drug screening). Minimum qualifications and alternative ranges can be found in the Class Specification.
Special Requirements
Valid California Driver’s License (CDL); provide license details in the application.
Drug screening must be passed before hiring.
