CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE LEADWORKER

Salary: $5,119.00 – $6,696.00 per month (minimum for new to state candidates). The position is a 12‑month limited term, full‑time, may be extended or made permanent.

Responsibilities
Supervise and assist the Complete Streets crew in maintaining sidewalks, crosswalks, and bicycle ways throughout the State Highway System.
Operate heavy and hand equipment, manage materials, and implement traffic control as part of a road crew.
Conduct site inventory and condition assessments of Complete Streets facilities.
Provide training to crew members, including specialty equipment operation when qualified and license‑approved.
Assist with emergency responses, overtime, irregular shifts, holidays, and weekend work as required.
Travel to workplaces, including overnight stays, to meet department needs.
Minimum Requirements
Unrestricted Class B driver’s license with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.
Preferred: Class A driver’s license for equipment operator responsibilities.
Ability to pass a drug screening.
Physical ability to perform duties in extreme conditions (heat up to 120°F, cold to –15°F, strong winds, rain, sleet, snow).
Special Requirements
Valid driver’s license is required for operating State vehicles.
Proficiency in operating Caltrans equipment when licensed.
Working on a limited term may involve overtime and emergency assignments per bargaining unit agreements.
Working Conditions The role is located within San Diego County (District 11 / Maintenance Division / West Region). Work can include night shifts, overtime, and emergency situations. Proper safety equipment and gear must be worn as directed by the department.
Safety Requirements
Appropriate footwear and long pants.
Caltrans issued shirts or safety vest over non‑safety shirts.
Hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, face shields, gloves, respirators, chaps, and other gear when required.
