Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker
Salary: $5,119.00 - $6,696.00 per month (minimum salary of classification if New to State).
Location: 6100 US Highway 101 N, Eureka, Humboldt County. The North Signs & Stripes Crew is a travel crew that may work out of town 50% of the time, under extreme temperature conditions from 20 to 100°, and exposed to strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow.
Job Description and Duties Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker will assist the CMS in planning and directing the work of the crew engaged in maintenance or construction on State Highways or highway property. The incumbent assumes the duties of the Supervisor for short durations in the supervisor’s absence.
Assisting the supervisor with scheduling work of the crew, ensuring equipment is serviced and maintained, leading crew and providing on‑the‑job training across maintenance functions.
Observing work habits to ensure compliance with the Code of Safe Practices and Chapter 8; ensuring safety of crew and public.
Conducting safety meetings and monthly/yearly workload planning.
Initiating usage of the district’s Lane Closure System.
Operating category 2 & 3 equipment with a required Class B CDL with tank vehicle endorsement.
Personal Safety Requirements
Work boots in good condition.
Long or short sleeved shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest over non‑safety shirts or coats.
Long pants; no shorts or cutoffs.
Provided safety gear (hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirator, chaps, or other gear) must be worn as required.
Minimum Requirements
Three years of experience in California state service performing duties of a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker, Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker, Caltrans Equipment Operator I or II, or a combination thereof.
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License (CDL) with a N (Tank Vehicle) endorsement; Class B commercial driver license preferred.
Drug screening must be passed prior to hiring.
Special Requirements
Valid California CDL; provide license number, class, expiration date, and endorsements on application.
Possession of Class B commercial driver license with N endorsement.
