About Us The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work Paralegal II position performs a wide variety of legal tasks, including drafting complex legal documents, document preparation, legal research into complex issues without specific precedents, litigation support and case management, data entry, and other organizational tasks. Projects are varied as required by the demands of the particular investigation and/or litigation, and this paralegal will be expected to assist the attorneys in handling the most complex litigation. Specifically, this position will primarily provide support to the attorneys managing inmate-filed tort claims pending against the Department. The position will also analyze potential agency liability and recommend settlement when appropriate. It is also responsible for drafting all settlement documents for inmate torts.

Responsibilities

Facilitating the service and fulfillment of served subpoenas and discovery requests and ensuring the Attorney General’s office receives all relevant and responsive documents.

Coordinating trial and motion dates, mediation dates, and any other pertinent event dates with the Attorney General’s office.

Establish, maintain, and close out tort claims filed against the Department.

Conducting research of case law utilizing the LexisNexis legal research database.

Composing legal forms and documents either by self-motivation or by the request and direction of the General Counsel as determined by the status of a file or proceeding.

Performing any additional duties assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Management Preferences Recruitment Range: $59,460.00 – $69,325.00 Annually. Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required.

North Carolina State Bar paralegal certification is preferred

Thorough knowledge of case, statutory, and common law

Working knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and the rules of evidence

Experience performing legal research using technology in accordance with preliminary instructions

Demonstrated experience in summarizing facts/evidence/writing assignments and preparing legal instruments

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from an appropriately accredited institution for paralegal training and two years of experience as a paralegal (OR)

Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of substantive paralegal experience (OR)

High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and six years of paralegal experience performing delegated, substantive legal work (OR)

an equivalent combination of education and experience
