Summary of Positions Under direct supervision of the Assistant Recreation Supervisor, the Day Camp Counselor implements various summer camp and general recreation activities for children seven (7) to thirteen (13) years old.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, organize and implement various summer camp activities for children ages 7 to 13 (i.e. sports, arts and crafts, nature activities, music, drama, field trips and cookouts).
Lead, supervise, and conduct classes and activities.
Supervise children properly and respond immediately during emergencies, including administering first aid as necessary.
Assist in control of equipment and supplies.
Maintain attendance, discipline and other records.
Effectively communicate with children, parents/guardians, bus drivers, and the public.
Set‑up and take down equipment, may require lifting up to 75 pounds (i.e. ice chests, equipment, etc.).
Drive van for field trips.
Arrive to work every day, on time as scheduled.
Other Job Functions Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Behaviors
Good verbal and written skills
Ability to motivate children and maintain a positive atmosphere, and if necessary, use positive disciplinary techniques
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
Ability to work in a team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co‑workers, subordinates and customers with respect
Build professional relationships with internal staff and customers
Ability to adhere to dress code expectations
Offer flexibility and adaptability, especially during times of change
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Minimum Qualifications
18 years of age or older
High School Diploma or equivalent
Good verbal and written skills
Valid Texas Driver's License and a safe driving record
Preferred Qualifications
Current CPR and First Aid Certifications preferred
Six months experience planning, coordinating and implementing recreation programs for elementary / middle school aged children preferred
Some related work experience preferred
Any work‑related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Conditions of Employment
Must pass a drug screen and background check.
Physical Demands Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, run and reach with hands and arms. Must be able to see, speak, and hear. Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50‑75 pounds.
Work Environment The Day Camp Counselor will be required to work a majority of time outdoors in extreme heat and occasionally indoor in a climate‑controlled building. Duties involve physical exertion such as standing, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting and reaching. Incumbent must be able to work from Monday through Friday.
