CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE LEADWORKER – Department of Transportation Salary: $5,119.00 – $6,696.00 per month (minimum for new to state). Final Filing Date: 1/16/2026.

Responsibilities Under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Leadworker assists a crew performing heavy manual labor in maintaining state highways, including fence & guardrail repair, bridge and roadway maintenance, roadside and vegetation maintenance, graffiti removal, culvert, drainage, and ditch inspection and cleaning, litter and debris removal, and operation of various equipment. Responsibilities also include planning and scheduling duties, developing work plans, conducting safety meetings, scheduling crew assignments, using proper traffic control devices, closing ramps and lane closures, operating manual and power tools, cleaning up highway spills, and working in confined spaces and elevated heights. May work overtime, irregular shifts, nights, holidays, weekends, temporary and intermittent shifts, and respond to emergency situations. May be loaned to other cost centers.

Working Conditions Position located throughout Orange County.

Outdoor work in varying climate conditions from cold and wet to hot and dry; exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, sharp noise, and uneven terrain.

Requires long periods of standing or sitting, possible stair climbing, and transportation across the district.

Work neighborhoods include fast‑moving traffic; requires Safety PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, face shield, respirator, ear plugs, and other necessary equipment.

Minimum Requirements

Drug screening required before hire.

Valid class B driver’s license with tanker endorsement (automatic and manual transmissions).

Who May Apply Individuals who are currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, reinstatement, list or LEAP eligibility, or SROA/Surplus candidates (prioritized). Training and Development assignment candidates may also be considered.

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of automotive/highway equipment operation and maintenance, safety regulations, emergency protocols, herbicide handling, and Caltrans maintenance functions.

Ability to communicate, follow directions, perform manual labor, maintain records, interpret simple blueprints, direct crew, and operate equipment.

Experience with blueprints, radio communication, MSDS reading, and problem solving in operational situations.
