Position Overview
Columbia's legendary Newstalk station, KFRU, has a very rare opening for
Program Director . Applicant must have a passion for delivering local news and information to the public, but other attributes are just as crucial for leading this iconic brand. A full understanding of the Newstalk format. A deep embrace of digital media. A complete absence of fear to lead, and to implement change. A complete understanding of automation systems, and how to best use them to our advantage. KFRU
is a historic Newstalk station that serves the Columbia market. Our talent includes some of the most well-known local personalities in Mid-Missouri. We were recently inducted into the Boone County Historical Society Hall of Fame. In addition to our top-tier local talent, we also feature a robust roster of syndicated talent including Vince Coglianese, Chris Plante, Mark Levin, and more. We are also Columbia’s home for NFL football, including the Super Bowl.
The five Cumulus Mid-Missouri stations are based in Columbia, a city that is home to the University of Missouri. Our stations also serve the state capital, Jefferson City, Lake of the Ozarks, and all of Mid-Missouri. Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities & Qualifications
The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of programming and management, including creation and implementation of the station’s strategic competitive position.
Creation and implementation of station strategy. Daily show debriefings and feedback to all on-air hosts. Oversight of content selection across all shows, assisting with booking when needed. Development/execution of promotions. Writing and production of imaging elements that emphasize the station’s purpose. Manage the brands digital presence through social media and podcasting. Highest & Best Use of scheduling (Full and Part-time Talent). Train in all areas of broadcasting production, performance, and execution. Hold regular scheduled meetings with staff to ensure highest performance. Understand and optimize the use of station automation systems. Cover on-air shifts as needed. Manage all technical operations and assist talent with support as needed. Consistently grow CUME and TSL on both stations. Protect the license of all stations and ensure FCC rules and regulations are followed at all times. Work as a close liaison with Chief Engineer to ensure studio’s automation systems and studio equipment are functioning properly
Qualifications
Top candidates will have unquestioned news and programming judgement. Proficiency with computers and automation systems are absolutely essential. Digital and social strategies must be as engaging as the on-air listening experience. Strong writing and production skills are required. The best candidates will be strong leaders with the ability to make difficult decisions, and to lead our team through challenging situations.
Savvy computer skills and proficiency with automation programs. Ability to multi-task and the discipline to focus on what is the highest and best use of your time. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with air staff and associated departments. Strong leadership, coaching, prioritization, and execution. Creative and strategic problem solve
