Under general supervision, operates a variety of transit vehicles such as diesel and electric motor coaches, cable cars, streetcars and light rail vehicles; transports passengers along a specific route and makes designated stops as required; accepts fares, issues transfers, gives general directional information; and performs related duties as required. Conducts pre-operational inspection of the transit vehicle to ensure it is functioning properly. Inspects the passenger compartment to ensure it is free from hazards and that camera lenses are unobscured. Safely navigates the vehicle through traffic along assigned routes under various environmental conditions, in accordance with traffic laws and departmental regulations. Operates disability access lifts to assist people in wheelchairs onto the vehicle and properly secures their wheelchairs. Collects fares, issues transfers, and checks passes to ensure validity. Uses vehicle intercom to communicate with passengers and call out stops and transfer points. Responds to customers’ questions regarding routes, directions, fares and transfers. Conducts post-operational inspection to detect defects, graffiti, or damage on the exterior of the vehicle. Contacts Central Control regarding emergencies or circumstances that may affect service. Completes accident, incident and/or miscellaneous reports documenting unusual occurrences. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Nature of Work
Incumbents may be required to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends; to work outdoors in all weather conditions; and to use computers. May require standing or sitting for prolonged periods and physical activities such as pulling poles, cranking switches in the subway, and assisting in the movement of disabled vehicles when possible. All employees must comply with FTA and SFMTA mandates. Work hours and days off may change several times per year. Qualifications
Must be at least 21 years old by October 21, 2025; AND Possession of a valid High School Diploma, GED or California High School Proficiency Certificate; AND One (1) year of verifiable satisfactory public contact or customer service experience; AND Possession of a valid class C Driver License. Must have been a licensed driver for at least three (3) continuous years from October 21, 2022 through October 21, 2025; AND Possession of or the ability to obtain a Class B - Driver License with a Passenger (P) Endorsement and no restrictions that prohibit operation of a SFMTA public transit vehicle; AND A good driving record during the three (3) years between October 21, 2022 through October 21, 2025 and through the date of appointment, meeting specific criteria (detailed driving history restrictions apply); AND No convictions within the past seven (7) years related to narcotics or dangerous drugs; AND No convictions for sex offenses as defined in Education Code 44010; AND Ability to obtain a School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB) certificate issued by DMV.
