This recruitment will be used to fill both full-time and part-time positions. Under general supervision, operates a variety of transit vehicles such as diesel and electric motor coaches, cable cars, streetcars and light rail vehicles; transports passengers along a specific route and makes designated stops as required; accepts fares, issues transfers, gives general directional information; and performs related duties as required. Responsibilities

Conducts pre-operational inspection of the transit vehicle, in accordance with federal and state laws and departmental regulations, to ensure it is functioning properly. Inspects the passenger compartment of the vehicle to ensure it is free from hazards and that video camera lenses are not obscured. Safely navigates the vehicle through traffic along assigned routes, under various environmental conditions, in accordance with traffic laws and departmental regulations. Operates the disability access lifts to assist people in wheelchairs onto the vehicle and properly secures their wheelchairs when they are on the vehicle. Collects fares from passengers and issues transfers; checks passenger transfers, fast passes, and electronic passes to ensure they are valid. Uses vehicle intercom to communicate instructions to passengers and to call out vehicle stops and transfer points. Responds to customers' questions regarding routes, directions, fares and transfers. Conducts a post-operational inspection of the outside of the vehicle to detect defects, body damage, broken windows, and graffiti. Contacts Central Control regarding emergencies or circumstances that may affect service (e.g., medical emergencies, vehicle malfunctions, heavy traffic, road hazards). Completes accident, incident and/or miscellaneous reports to document unusual occurrences. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Nature of Work

Incumbents may be required to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends; work outdoors in all weather conditions; use computers; stand or sit for prolonged periods; perform physical activities; and comply with FTA and SFMTA mandates. Operators bid for assignments by seniority. Work hours and days off may change several times per year. How to qualify

Must be at least 21 years old by October 21, 2025; AND Possession of a valid High School Diploma, GED or California High School Proficiency Certificate; AND One (1) year of verifiable satisfactory public contact or customer service experience; AND Possession of a valid class C Driver License. Must have been a licensed driver for at least three (3) continuous years from October 21, 2022 through October 21, 2025; AND Possession of or the ability to obtain a Class B Driver License with a Passenger (P) Endorsement and no restrictions that prohibit operation of a SFMTA public transit vehicle; AND A good driving record during the three (3) years between October 21, 2022 through October 21, 2025 and through the date of appointment, meeting the following requirements: no more than 1 moving violations between October 21, 2024 and October 21, 2025; no more than 3 moving violations between October 21, 2022 through October 21, 2025; no accidents where applicant contributed to cause; no repeated violations for unsafe operation; no convictions of specified vehicle code offenses; other violations reviewed case-by-case; AND No convictions within the past seven (7) years between October 21, 2018 through October 21, 2025 related to narcotics or dangerous drugs; AND No convictions of any sex offense as defined in Section 44010 of the Education Code; AND Ability to obtain a School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB) certificate issued by DMV. Candidates considered for appointment may be required to pass a medical examination. The SFMTA class 9163 Transit Operator is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing. Applicants for safety-sensitive positions must undergo testing and have a negative result before payroll placement. Details on testing policies are provided in the announcement. Transit Operator Training:

If successful, applicants who do not possess a Class B Driver License with P endorsement and airbrakes must obtain one before starting training. Training program includes classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. The trainee rate is $30.8875/hour. Attendance at all training sessions is required. If absent without proper notice, candidates may be released from training. If proper notification is provided, a candidate released during training may request to be placed back on the eligible list, subject to list availability and policies. What else should I know?

Eligible List/Score Report:
