Under general supervision, operates a variety of transit vehicles such as diesel and electric motor coaches, cable cars, streetcars and light rail vehicles; transports passengers along a specific route and makes designated stops as required; accepts fares, issues transfers, gives general directional information; and performs related duties as required. Examples of Important and Essential Duties

Conducts pre-operational inspection of the transit vehicle to ensure it is functioning properly in accordance with laws and regulations. Inspects the passenger compartment to ensure it is free from hazards and that video camera lenses are unobscured. Safely navigates the vehicle through traffic along assigned routes under various conditions in accordance with traffic laws and regulations. Operates disability access lifts and properly secures wheelchairs on the vehicle. Collects fares, issues transfers, and checks validity of transfers and passes. Uses intercom to communicate with passengers and announce stops and transfer points. Responds to customers’ questions regarding routes, directions, fares and transfers. Performs post-operational inspection of the vehicle exterior to detect defects or damage. Contacts Central Control regarding emergencies or service-impacting circumstances. Completes accident, incident and/or miscellaneous reports as needed. Performs related duties as assigned. Nature of work: Incumbents may work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends; outdoor work in all weather; standing or sitting for extended periods; physical activities including equipment handling and assisting in the movement of disabled vehicles. All employees must comply with FTA and SFMTA mandates. Bid for assignments by seniority. Hours and days off may change. Qualifications and how to qualify

Minimum qualifications Must be at least 21 years old by October 21, 2025 High School Diploma, GED or California High School Proficiency Certificate One year of verifiable satisfactory public contact or customer service experience Possession of a valid Class C Driver License; must have been licensed for at least three continuous years from October 21, 2022 through October 21, 2025 Possession of or ability to obtain a Class B Driver License with Passenger Endorsement and no restrictions that prohibit operation of a public transit vehicle Good driving record for the past three years with specific limitations on moving violations and accidents No disqualifying convictions related to vehicle codes or narcotics within specified periods Ability to obtain a School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB) certificate Verification

Selection process : After application, qualified candidates complete a minimum qualification supplemental questionnaire (MQSQ) and a Training and Experience Evaluation (weight 100%). The SFMTA is a safety-sensitive position; drug and alcohol testing is required in accordance with federal regulations. Positive tests will disqualify a candidate from hire for a period defined by policy. Prior employers’ drug/alcohol history may be reviewed as part of the process. Training : Transit Operator Training is required, with a trainee pay rate of $30.8875 per hour. Training attendance is mandatory; non-attendance may lead to removal from training. If a candidate is not placed back on the eligible list after training, they will need to re-apply in the next filing period. How to apply
