We are seeking a
Payroll Specialist III
to join a large payroll team supporting 3,200 employees across multiple states and unions. This role is responsible for end-to-end payroll processing, ensuring compliance with union agreements, state/federal requirements, and internal SOX controls. The position involves hands-on payroll system management, high-volume processing, and extensive collaboration across HR, Finance, and operational teams. Temp-to-Hire Compensation
≈$31/hour (perm conversion $63K–$73K) Schedule
8am–5pm, flexibility available; overtime may be needed during peak cycles. Note: during the first 90 days, candidates may be required onsite Fridays as well. Key Responsibilities
Process weekly and bi-weekly payroll for union and non-union employees across multiple states. Enter, validate, and reconcile payroll data, including hours worked, pay adjustments, deductions, and corrections. Ensure compliance with company policies, union contracts, SOX internal controls, and federal/state payroll regulations. Reconcile payroll data with the general ledger; investigate and resolve discrepancies. Respond to employee payroll inquiries promptly and professionally. Assist with payroll tax reporting and compliance, including local, state, and federal filings. Generate and distribute payroll reports for Finance, HR, and management teams. Participate in audits, year-end reconciliations (W-2s), and special projects. Support payroll system upgrades, automations, and interface issue resolution. Qualifications
Associate’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. 3+ years of in-house payroll processing experience (ADP/Paychex alone not sufficient). Hands-on experience with enterprise payroll systems (e.g., Lawson, SAP, Great Plains, Workday). Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, formulas). High-volume payroll experience required (500+ employees; 1,000+ preferred). Multi-state and union payroll experience strongly preferred. Knowledge of payroll taxes, deductions, and compliance regulations. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and deadline management.
