The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual for a permanent Correctional Industries Supervisor 2 (CIS2) vacancy in our Optical Department. This position works at Airway Heights Corrections Center near Spokane, WA. The position typically works 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Correctional Industries (CI) is committed to maintaining and expanding incarcerated work training programs which develop marketable skills, instill and promote positive work ethics and reduce the tax burden of corrections. This position supports that objective by providing assistance in the supervision and training of incarcerated workers in the production/processing and manufacturing of Correctional Industries Optical Products.
Responsibilities
Provide supervision and training of incarcerated workers and staff, as assigned.
Instruct American Board of Opticianry (ABO) prep course for incarcerated individuals to further their optical knowledge.
Supervise and train incarcerated workers and/or supervise assigned staff in the training of incarcerated workers in equipment and tool safety, operation, and maintenance as required by equipment user manuals, L&I safety standards, DOC Policies, facility Operational Memoranda, and established expectations prior to operating any equipment.
Document all training as required including performance of ABO participants and adjust curriculum accordingly.
Document and provide feedback on staff and incarcerated worker job performance and behavior using documents including but not limited to infraction reports, incident reports, behavior logs, performance appraisals, certificates of proficiency, letters of counseling, or verbally, as appropriate and in accordance with DOC Policy.
Plan and schedule productions/services, direct and assign incarcerated workers, coordinate production/scheduling efforts with other staff, develop and operate preventative maintenance schedule, monitor and verify SOPs are being followed (e.g. identify and report deficiencies, conduct in‑process inspections, verify correct raw material usage).
Ensure safe and secure operations: maintain security and discipline over incarcerated workers, account for incarcerated workers, execute and maintain tool control processes, account for and document the perpetual inventory of consumable items, maintain key control.
Ensure staff and incarcerated workers receive safety training and adhere to safe work practices: maintain proper recordkeeping, investigate accident reports, participate in and/or conduct monthly Safety Committee/meetings.
Required Qualifications
American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) certifications.
At least two (2) years full‑time work experience in private industry in the production/processing/manufacturing of Optical products or as a Correctional Industries Supervisor Assistant (CISA) in the production/processing/manufacturing of Optical products.
One (1) year full‑time work experience supervising employees within the past 15 years in which the supervisory duties included directing work of the employees supervised and providing employee performance feedback.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office productions or equivalent software programs.
Effective oral and written communication skills in routine and emergent situations.
Ability to develop and promote positive and professional interpersonal relationships.
Ability to set and manage priorities.
Desired Qualifications
Washington State Dispensing Optician License.
An AA Degree or Vocational Certificate/Degree from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
Manufacturing Resource Planning software knowledge (MRP).
Experience in teaching and training.
Experience working within a correctional facility.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment
Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
Complete a felony disclosure form prior to employment and submit to a criminal background check.
Successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in‑service and other required training.
Provide physical residential address and home telephone number to the Department of Corrections.
Become familiar and comply with all Department policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
Submit to drug testing in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement and agency policy.
This position is included in a union shop.
Must pass pre‑employment UA test.
