The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual for a permanent Correctional Industries Supervisor 2 (CIS2) vacancy in our Optical Department. This position works at Airway Heights Corrections Center near Spokane, WA. Typical work hours are 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Position Summary Correctional Industries (CI) is a unique blend of business and government, using private industry tools and techniques to provide a public service. Operations within the state correctional facilities are supported by sales to state agencies, county and local governments, and not-for-profit organizations.
This position supports that objective by providing assistance in the supervision and training of incarcerated workers in the production, processing and manufacturing of Correctional Industries Optical Products.
Key Responsibilities
Provide supervision and training of incarcerated workers and staff, as assigned: Instruct ABO prep course for incarcerated individuals to further their optical knowledge; supervise and train workers and staff in equipment and tool safety, operation and maintenance according to user manuals, safety standards and DOC policies; document all training and adjust curriculum accordingly.
Plan and schedule production/services, direct and assign incarcerated workers, coordinate production/scheduling efforts with other staff, develop and operate preventative maintenance schedules, monitor and verify SOPs.
Maintain security and discipline over incarcerated workers, account for workers, execute and maintain tool control processes, maintain key control and perpetual inventory of consumables.
Ensure staff and incarcerated workers receive safety training and adhere to safe work practices: maintain records, investigate accident reports, participate in monthly safety committee meetings.
Required Qualifications
American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) certifications.
At least two years full‑time work experience in private industry in the production/processing/manufacturing of optical products or as a CIS Assistant in the same production.
At least one year full‑time supervisory experience within the past 15 years, including directing work of employees supervised and providing performance feedback.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office or equivalent.
Effective oral and written communication skills in routine and emergent situations.
Ability to develop and promote positive professional interpersonal relationships.
Ability to set and manage priorities.
Desired Qualifications
Washington State Dispensing Optician license.
An AA degree or vocational certificate from an accredited institution.
Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) software knowledge.
Experience in teaching and training.
Experience working within a correctional facility.
Special Requirements & Conditions of Employment
Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
Complete a felony disclosure form and submit to a criminal background check.
Successfully complete orientation and all mandatory training within mandated timeframes.
Provide residential address and telephone number to the Department of Corrections.
Comply with all Department policies, procedures and collective bargaining agreements.
Submit to drug testing in accordance with agency policy.
This position is included in a union shop.
Must pass pre‑employment UA test.
