Duties and Responsibilities As a Surface Maintenance Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

Troubleshoot, perform maintenance and major repairs on heavy‑duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles, including self‑propelled artillery, tracked cargo and personnel carriers, road graders, mobile cranes, front loaders, conveyors, bulldozers, power shovels, compressors, generators, tanks, tracked combat vehicles, sedans, buses, all‑terrain vehicles, trucks, semi‑trailers, forklifts, tractors, and accessory equipment.

Diagnose mechanical failures using visual and auditory checks, test equipment (engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges) and computer diagnostic tools.

Remove, disassemble, repair, overhaul or modify major systems including internal and turbine engines, automatic and non‑automatic transmissions, heavy‑duty drive line systems, hydraulic utility systems and electrical/suspension systems.

Reassemble engines and components, adjust, test and reinstall systems as required.

Provide technical guidance and leadership to lower‑grade mechanics; assist with major repair work and field sustainment maintenance at unit locations.

Conduct readiness and repair inspections, ensuring vehicles are properly serviced and preventive maintenance is performed.

Maintain and repair electronic communication equipment (radios, field telephones, amplifiers, switchboards, recorders, intercoms) as needed.

Assist in maintaining production reports and records; make recommendations for improvements to production efficiency.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible National Guard assignment; Selectees must wear the military uniform. Acceptance constitutes concurrence with all requirements. Males born after 31 December 1959 must register for Selective Service. Federal employment suitability is determined by a background investigation. Probationary period may apply. Direct deposit is mandatory. A security clearance is required.

The position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act. A domestic violence conviction disqualifies the applicant. Candidates must establish effective professional relationships with coworkers and customers and may be required to work overtime. Environmental responsibilities are governed by legal and regulatory requirements.

Career Ladder:

WG‑05/08/10; promotion potential up to WG‑10. Indefinite employment; not permanent tenure.

Qualifications Military Grades:

Enlisted – E‑8 and below.

General Experience:

Knowledge of equipment sufficient to perform routine jobs and simple preventive maintenance, using common tools and equipment.

Specialized Experience

(per WO grade):

WG‑05:

Experience with hand tools under close supervision.

WG‑08:

Experience with hand/ power tools, test and measurement devices; basic mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory; ability to read parts lists, repair manuals, diagrams, and schematics.

WG‑10:

Experience diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying complex vehicles, equipment, and systems; application of independent judgment and diagnostic equipment.

Quality of Experience:

Length of time is not a qualifier; evaluation is based on duties performed. Compatibility criteria must be followed.
