Summary
This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service position for a Surface Maintenance Mechanic – FMS 5 (Position Description Number D1194000). It is a career ladder position with WG 5/8/10 promotion potential.
Overview Open 10/16/2025 – Closed 11/16/2025. Salary $26.22 to $37.70 per hour. Location Edgewood, MD. Full‑time. Secret clearance required. No remote work. Telework not eligible.
Duties & Responsibilities As a Surface Maintenance Mechanic, you will:
Troubleshoot, maintain, and major repair heavy‑duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical, automotive vehicles.
Diagnose mechanical failures using visual, auditory checks, and test equipment.
Disassemble, repair, overhaul engines and major assemblies.
Reassemble engines and systems, adjust, test, and reinstall as needed.
Perform remote maintenance in field locations and provide technical guidance to lower grade mechanics.
Conduct readiness inspections and preventive maintenance operations.
Maintain and repair electronic communication equipment.
Assist in production reports and records.
Requirements & Qualifications
Military grades Enlisted – E‑6 and below.
Experience/Training: WG‑05 – routine hand tools; WG‑08 – hand, power tools, diagnostic devices; WG‑10 – complex diagnostic, overhaul, and modifications.
Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems.
Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify vehicles and equipment.
Secret clearance and background investigation required.
Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance.
Education Provide transcripts or documentation to support educational claims. Must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized institution.
