Specialist Pharmacist - Adult Cardiothoracic Employer:

Job Overview We are offering the opportunity to work within the nationally recognised Cardiothoracic Services board in a tertiary referral trust. The role involves providing a high quality clinical pharmacy service on adult wards, promoting medication safety, optimising medicines use and facilitating safe discharge.

Key details:

12th December 2025 interview date, 37 h 30 min/week, full‑time, flexi‑working available.

Main Duties

Provide clinical pharmacy services to adult cardiothoracic patients, including medication talks as part of the Cardiac Rehab Programme.

Liaise with senior staff regarding the safe and effective use of medicines.

Train, supervise and support junior pharmacy staff.

Potential for future development (pre‑registration tutor, diploma mentor, etc.) and rotation within the board.

Participate in extended hours, on‑call service and regular weekend working.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain clinical pharmacy services within adult cardiothoracic services.

Promote the safe, rational and cost‑effective use of medicines with nursing, medical and other multidisciplinary staff.

Provide person‑centred care and support patients to achieve their medication goals.

Collaborate with the pharmacy directorate’s extended hours and on‑call service.

Support colleagues and cover for absent staff as required.

Person Specification Knowledge – Essential

Competence in general clinical pharmacy practice.

Competence in specialist pharmacotherapy.

Skills – Essential

Recommend, substantiate and communicate therapeutic options.

Communicate verbally and in writing with patients, junior pharmacy, nursing, medical and multidisciplinary staff.

Influence and lead others in pharmaceutical care.

Commitment to enhancing patient care quality.

Experience – Essential

Significant post‑registration hospital pharmacy experience.

Work experience in a hospital setting.

Post‑graduate clinical pharmacy experience.

Experience with a specialist patient cohort.

Qualifications – Essential

UK‑registered pharmacist (GPhC).

Completion of MPharm or equivalent degree and pre‑registration training.

Post‑graduate qualification in clinical pharmacy or equivalent evidence.

Desirable

Teaching skills; use of presentation, spreadsheet and database software.

Experience within a specialist area and involvement in clinical audit.

Clinical Diploma or Masters; independent prescriber status.
