Manager, Continuous Improvement
Job Summary The role of the Continuous Improvement (CI) Manager drives operational excellence by instilling a continuous improvement mindset. The person in this position should be fluent in lean manufacturing and have the ability to utilize lean tools (i.e. 6 Sigma, FEMA, SPC, and the DMAIC process) and HPI to permanently resolve problems and eliminate waste. Collaboration with every level in the Mill is paramount and must be done in a way that engages and inspires the workforce. Additionally, the CI Manager tracks cost savings as well as coordinates with the Corporate CI team to ensure the Mill is properly aligned.
Key Responsibilities
Have the ability identify and eliminate waste:
Over processing – Utilize tools such as SPC to stay in control
Waiting – Work with the organization to build a 5S system so tools and processes are properly organized
Defects - Ensure that key quality aspects are understood and systems are in place to be properly monitored
Inventory – Help organize and build systems to ensure that controls are in-place to properly maintain production materials such as chemicals and machine consumables
Utilize lean tools to drive continuous improvement:
6 Sigma – Use statistical analysis to track processes for optimum performance and data analysis
Use DMAIC and FMEA to identify long‑term continuous improvement projects
Lead team efforts to identify root cause of issues and identify permanent solutions
Causal analysis and corrective action tracking:
Use the Domtar problem‑solving methodologies / process to identify root cause of events and drive sustainable solutions
Solutions must be organized and tracked in the Enablon system
Organizational Effectiveness:
Engage and inspire the workforce by taking a leadership role that empowers employees to make decisions.
Build tools and systems to ensure that employees have necessary tools to make good decisions
Work effectively with every level of the organization
Build a mindset within the organization that will sustain the continuous improvement process.
Educate employees and introduce lean manufacturing tools
Cost Savings:
Develop annual cost reduction targets and drive the cost reduction process
Work closely with the Mill Finance team to maintain the mill cost reduction spreadsheet
Identify cost reduction projects and work with teams to achieve results
Corporate CI Initiatives:
Collaborate with the Corporate CI team and help ensure that corporate initiatives are properly implemented at the mill level
Build a working relationship with the group to ensure any corporate learnings are brought back to the Mill
Qualifications / Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Pulp and Paper Science or Chemical Engineering, preferred); equivalent experience may be considered
Five (5) years of previous manufacturing leadership experience, preferred superintendent level or above
6 Sigma certification minimum green belt, with black belt preferred
Lean manufacturing experience
Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels within the mill
High degree of collaboration with mill leadership
Ability to prioritize time and multi‑task
Critical Competencies for Success
Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels within the mill
Ability to work on multiple projects at one time
Good working knowledge of mill operations
Good Microsoft skills with high level of competency in analyzing data using Excel, and Minitab
Ability to use problem‑solving and corrective action tracking tools
Knowledge of lean manufacturing and related tools
