Dispatcher–Clerk, CALTRANS – Caltrans District 3
Position Overview
Department of Transportation – Caltrans District 3, Oakland, Alameda County. Salary range $4,106.00 – $5,139.00 per month. Permanent intermittent – 1500 hours. Telework: In Office. Works irregular hours, including night shifts, weekends, and holidays. Salary for new‑to‑state candidates is at the minimum of the classification.
Responsibilities
Operate 40+ channel radio communication system to dispatch and coordinate traffic, incidents, and incident response within the Nine‑Bay Area counties and portions of Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Lake Counties.
Answer telephones, operate word processing equipment, maintain and update dispatch records, enter data into spreadsheets and reports.
Use geographic knowledge of the Southwest California region and maintain situational awareness of traffic patterns, incidents, and dispatch priorities.
Support dispatcher‑clerks in incident management, information gathering, and communication with field agencies.
Qualifications & Minimum Requirements
Valid 40 words‑per‑minute typing certificate.
Passed DOJ background check and drug screening before appointment.
Knowledge of California geography, highway system, and emergency communication protocols.
Good verbal communication, clear enunciation, tuned voice for radio transmission, and ability to perform clerical tasks quickly and accurately.
Background investigation cleared, drug screening cleared prior to final job offer.
Desirable Qualifications
Strong map reading, fast map navigation, and ability to follow oral and written directions under pressure.
Experience with Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations; experience in a dispatch or traffic support role.
