This is an opportunity to lead a field engineering team, helping customers understand and implement Canonical's open source solutions across public clouds and data centers. The role involves working with a range of cloud offerings, from Ubuntu to virtualization, private cloud, Kubernetes, and advanced open source solutions like MLops platforms and data platforms. As Canonical expands into new industries such as telecom, finance, healthcare, and media, we develop new open source solutions tailored to these sectors.

We believe Engineering Managers should be outstanding engineers, comfortable troubleshooting and engaging in technical presales conversations. They should contribute technically but focus primarily on guiding the team’s direction, focus, and delivery. We also focus on growing management skills and soft skills in engineers interested in management roles.

Our goal is to make open source easier, more reliable, and more secure, aiming to provide the 'most software to most companies'. We select engineers globally for brilliance and motivation, and our managers help teams achieve more than they thought possible, fostering pride in their work.

The role of a Cloud Field Engineering Manager at Canonical The team of cloud solutions architects at Canonical works directly with customers to design private and public cloud solutions tailored to workload needs. The portfolio includes on-premise solutions like Openstack, MicroCloud, Ceph, and deployable solutions such as Kubernetes, Kubeflow, Spark, PostgreSQL, among others. Managers and team members deploy, test, and transition solutions to support or managed services teams, and participate in presales to provide technical advice.

The manager is responsible for line management, career guidance, talent development, representing the team technically, and collaborating with other teams and customers. Active participation in technical presales is also expected.

Location This role is home-based, managing a team within your time zone.

Responsibilities

Lead and develop a team of Field engineers across presales and professional services.

Solve customer problems by promoting technologies and acting as a trusted advisor.

Work remotely within a single major time zone.

Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback.

Identify and measure team health indicators.

Implement disciplined engineering processes.

Represent your team and products to stakeholders, partners, and customers.

Develop and promote best engineering and organizational practices.

Plan and track progress on goals and projects.

Participate in leadership team collaborations.

Qualifications

Knowledge of cloud computing technologies such as Kubernetes, Openstack, AWS, GCP, Azure, Ceph.

Practical Linux and networking skills.

Experience in technical presales.

Strong communication skills in English.

Experience in leading, coaching, and mentoring engineers.

Organizational skills to ensure timely, high-quality results.

Strong academic background.

Willingness to travel up to 40%.

Additional Skills

Second language (Spanish or French) preferred.

Python knowledge.

Experience with external partnerships and stakeholder feedback.
